The natural world remains in critical condition

2025 was one of the three warmest years on record, with average global temperatures rising to 1.44 °C above pre-industrial levels— placing the world alarmingly close to the 1.5 °C threshold set under the Paris Agreement. In the Philippines, similar extremes have been recorded, particularly in terms of heat index, reaching dangerous levels ranging from 45 to 46 °C during summer months. This accelerated warming continues to intensify the triple planetary crisis— climate change, pollution, and biodiversity loss—posing serious risks to both ecological and human health. Recent studies underscore the mounting toll of environmental degradation: 99% of the world’s population live in areas where air pollution levels are high, while more than 1 million species are on track for extinction in the coming decades.
