Energy-Saving Aircon Tips to Beat the Heat this Summer

Energy Saving Aircon Tips

As temperatures rise, so do electricity bills—as air conditioners run longer and compressors work harder to beat the heat. But here’s the good news: with the right usage habits and a bit of maintenance, you can stay cool without breaking the bank.

Here are some practical tips—tested and recommended by the Meralco Power Lab—to help you make the most of your aircon this summer.

1. Use a Timer or Smart Plug

Don’t leave your unit running all night. Use the timer function to automatically switch off after a few hours or when the room has cooled. For added convenience and control, smart plugs can help manage usage even when you're not home.

2. Keep Rooms Sealed

Close doors and windows while the aircon is running to prevent warm air from entering the room. Block out sunlight using curtains or blinds to reduce the heat load in the room—your aircon won’t have to work as hard.

3. Clean Filters Regularly

Dusty filters force your unit to work harder, increasing power consumption. Clean filters at least once every two weeks, especially during high-use months. A clean filter can reduce energy use by up to 9%. Make sure to also have your unit professionally cleaned and checked every quarter to prevent allergies and ensure peak performance.

4. Explore Inverter Technology

On average, you can save as much as ₱4.25 per hour* with an inverter AC versus conventional AC.

If you use your aircon for long hours, using an inverter unit can result in meaningful savings in the long run.

*Basis for savings calculation:

  • Average Cost to Operate a 1.0HP window and split-type ACU tested in 2019 vs in 2024.

  • Meralco average residential rate from Jan 2024-Dec 2024 = 12.1817 Peso/kWh.

Note: savings vary depending on your aircon model and actual unit condition

More power to you

By keeping your aircon clean, using it wisely, and considering new technology, you take control of your summer comfort and electricity bill.
