Planned and unplanned brownouts

A brownout is a temporary loss of electricity. Some interruptions are scheduled so crews can work safely on the network; others happen unexpectedly and require investigation before an accurate restoration estimate is available.

Planned brownouts

Meralco may schedule an interruption for maintenance, equipment upgrades, network extensions, or government-requested relocation work. Affected customers may receive advance notice, and the maintenance schedule provides the expected work window, affected areas, circuit, and reason.

Unplanned brownouts

Severe weather, damaged or failed equipment, accidents, objects contacting power lines, and power-supply constraints can interrupt service without advance notice. Check the brownout status first; if your location is not reflected, use the reporting handoff so Meralco can assess it.

How service restoration progresses

The sequence can vary with the cause, affected facilities, weather, access, and the safety of customers and crews.

  1. The interruption is confirmed

System information and customer reports help identify the affected area and the likely facilities involved.

  2. A crew investigates

The appropriate field team is assigned, travels to the area, and checks the network for the cause and any immediate danger.

  3. Damage is assessed and repaired

Crews isolate unsafe equipment, arrange the materials or support needed, and complete repairs when conditions allow.

  4. Service and status are updated

Power is restored as safely as possible. The estimated restoration time may change as the field assessment becomes more complete.

Brownout questions

  1. What should I check before reporting a brownout?

Check the brownout status first to see whether Meralco is already aware of the interruption. Note whether the loss of power appears limited to your property or also affects nearby homes, buildings, a street, or a block. Keep your Service ID or complete service address ready.

  2. Why can the estimated restoration time change?

An early estimate is based on the information available at that time. Travel and access, weather, the severity of damage, crew assignments, safety controls, and the materials required can change the expected completion time after inspection.

  3. How can I receive brownout advisories?

Review the notification settings available in My Meralco and choose the supported email, SMS, or app options for your account. Keep your contact information current so account-related advisories can reach you.

  4. What if I see a fallen line, damaged post, or sparking equipment?

Keep a safe distance and do not touch the equipment or anything in contact with it. Use the safety-hazard reporting handoff for fallen lines or posts, streetlight problems, suspected illegal connections, fires, accidents, or other electrical dangers.
