Long-Term Sustainability Strategy

A three-horizon pathway to 2050

One Meralco’s 30-year roadmap advances cleaner energy through a just, orderly, and affordable transition while keeping reliability, affordability, and energy security in view.

Transforming the energy system in stages

Wind turbines generate renewable energy across a green landscape.

The Philippines needs more energy to support economic growth and improve quality of life. At the same time, the energy system must respond to climate change, changing technologies, and the needs of customers and communities.

The Long-Term Sustainability Strategy brings these priorities together through renewable energy expansion, a more diversified supply mix, energy storage, grid readiness, and the careful adoption of emerging technologies. Its three horizons provide a practical sequence for action while keeping the transition just, orderly, and affordable.

The roadmap to 2050

The strategy moves from work already underway, through the adoption of next-generation technologies, toward deep decarbonization and long-term sustainability leadership.

  1. 2021–2030

    Current horizon

Initiate our low-carbon transition to serve the country’s growing energy demand with greener power

    Progress through 2025

One Meralco continued to expand renewable energy supply, advance cleaner generation, modernize the distribution network, and develop customer solutions that support more informed and efficient energy use.

    Commitments through 2030

The current horizon focuses on accelerating renewable energy contracting, strengthening system reliability and resilience, reducing operational impacts, and preparing the organization and its partners for the next stage of the transition.

  2. 2031–2040

    Next horizon

Accelerate our green energy shift through the adoption of next-generation cleantech

    Future direction

The next horizon anticipates broader use of advanced storage, smarter networks, lower-carbon fuels, and other emerging technologies as they become technically ready, commercially viable, and appropriate for the Philippine energy system.

  3. 2041–2050

    Long-term horizon

Drive deep decarbonization and achieve sustainability leadership in the energy sector

    Long-term ambition

The final horizon is directed toward deep decarbonization, a coal-free generation portfolio by 2050, and an energy system that can continue serving the country reliably while supporting inclusive and sustainable growth.

The principles that guide the transition

The pace and sequence may evolve as technologies, policy, markets, and national needs change, but three principles continue to guide decisions.

  1. Just

Consider the people and communities affected by change and help expand opportunity as the energy system evolves.

  2. Orderly

Sequence investments, technologies, and operating changes without compromising safety, reliability, resilience, or energy security.

  3. Affordable

Advance the transition with disciplined attention to customer impact, system costs, and long-term value.
