Lighting and Windows
Use daylight, shading, task lighting, and efficient lamps together so the room stays comfortable without lighting or cooling more than necessary.
Light the task, not the whole room
Start with the activity: reading, cooking, working, relaxing, or moving safely through a space. Direct light where it is needed, then use general lighting only to the level that keeps the room comfortable and usable.
Use daylight deliberately
- Open curtains or blinds when daylight is useful and does not add excessive heat or glare.
- Shade windows that receive strong direct sun, especially when an air-conditioner is running.
- Keep windows and light-colored surfaces clean so available daylight can travel farther.
Choose and care for lighting
- Prefer efficient lamps such as LEDs in frequently used fittings, with brightness and color suited to the space.
- Switch off lights in unoccupied rooms when it is safe to do so.
- Clean lamps and fixtures after switching them off and allowing them to cool.
- Replace flickering, damaged, or unusually hot fittings through a qualified person.
