Tips by Appliance
Use one repeatable check for the appliances that shape your household consumption, from cooling and refrigeration to laundry, entertainment, and cooking.
Start with the appliance you use most
List the appliances that run for many hours, heat or cool, or operate in frequent cycles. Use their exact model information where possible, then compare the four factors below.
Quick appliance checks
- Air-conditioner: room conditions, capacity, thermostat and fan settings, filter condition, and operating hours.
- Refrigerator: model and capacity, door seals, internal airflow, temperature setting, placement, and door-opening habits.
- Electric fan: size and type, useful speed, blade and grille cleanliness, and whether anyone is in the room.
- Television and entertainment: screen and brightness settings, active hours, auto-sleep features, and connected devices left running.
- Washing machine or dryer: load size, cycle, water temperature, spin, filter condition, and cycles per week.
- Cooking equipment: portion size, method, cookware, preheating, rated power, and total cooking time.
When replacing equipment, compare capacity and official efficiency information for models designed to perform the same job.
Use the four-part check
Work in this order so a new purchase is not the only solution you consider.
-
Size
Is the capacity appropriate for the room, load, portion, or household need?
-
Settings
Are temperature, speed, brightness, cycle, and automatic controls set for the actual task?
-
Usage
How many hours, days, or cycles does it run, and is that schedule still necessary?
-
Maintenance
Are filters, seals, vents, coils, blades, cookware, and other service items clean and sound?
Turn the check into an estimate
Compare the appliance you use today
Use its exact rated power and realistic operating pattern, then test a different setting, schedule, or model.
