Home Charging Installation Guide

Whether you already drive an EV or are planning the switch, home charging offers everyday convenience and flexibility. This guide covers the essentials — from choosing the right charger to preparing your home for safe installation.

Which EV Charger Fits Your Lifestyle?

  • Level 1 Charger (AC)

Best for overnight charging, lower daily mileage and regular city driving

A portable charger that plugs into a standard household outlet

Power rating is less than 3.7 kW

Service Panel may require an upgrade

Note: Light EV (2/3-wheel) chargers typically work with existing capacity, while passenger 4-wheel EV chargers may require a service upgrade.

  • Level 2 Charger (AC)

Best for faster charging, multiple users, longer driving distances

A charger that is wall-mounted and requires installation by a licensed electrical engineer or an authorized contractor

Power rating ranges from 7.4-11.5 kW

Service Panel upgrade may be necessary

Note: Level 2 chargers have higher power rating and typically require a service upgrade.

How do you set up your EV Charger?

Expand each step to learn what to prepare, what to do, and what to expect next.

  1. CHECK if your home is EV-Ready

Have a licensed electrical practitioner (RME, REE, PEE) check your home’s available electrical capacity, recommend the right charger setup, and identify a safe installation location.

  2. PREPARE — Get your electrical setup ready

Complete any electrical work based on the assessment of your licensed electrical practitioner.

If additional service capacity from Meralco is required, apply at a Meralco Business Center or through mer.ph/ServiceApplication — opens in a new tab.

Meralco will evaluate your application and advise you on the required load-side work.

  3. INSTALL and Start Charging

Once your home is ready, have a licensed electrical practitioner install and test your charger before use.
